My dear friends,
Our mission at UUCV is to “transform lives and care for the world.” We begin that work within ourselves every Sunday, as we gather to feed our souls and create Beloved Community.
As you step further into the life of the congregation, you find that UUCV is about so much more than Sunday worship services; we are a deeply connected and caring family
|
|
|
|
|
You feel a part of this family every time you sit with a small group. You experience that connection in action when you offer to bring a casserole to someone in need. You experience the joy of the youth who find themselves in a place where they are free to express themselves without blame or shame.
We transform lives and care for the world in the small ways that we give and support one another.
I’d like to bring two ways of giving your support to your UUCV family to your attention: The Caring and Compassion Committee and the Minister’s Discretionary Fund.
You can give of your time by coming to a Caring and Compassion meeting, which will begin meeting in July on first Sundays of each month after coffee hour on Sundays in the minister’s office. I look forward to seeing you there!
Additionally, you can give of your treasure by donating to the Minister's Discretionary Fund. This fund has been helping UUCV members in need since the early days of the church. The person standing next to you in church might be down on their luck and might need a little help to make it to their next paycheck, and you can help with a small (or large!) donation to this fund. In order to make your donation, contact either myself of Cindy Good, our treasurer.
Your gifts are welcome and deeply appreciated, but more than that, your gifts are a gift to our whole community as well as to yourself!
And as always, I invite you to contact me at minister@uucv.net just to chat about anything at all. I look forward to connecting with you in person, online, or via phone!
With so much love, Rev. Meg

June 25 – Bev Motich – The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens
The UUCV Book Group meets at 6:30 pm on the 4th Sunday of each month for a lively, thoughtful discussion.
The selection for June 25th is
The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens. "College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran--and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home, after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder." (Goodreads.com)
If you've ever wanted to get involved, we'd love to have you join us! Please email Book Group Coordinator Riley Johnson to learn more: riles1806@gmail.com.

June Social Justice Opportunities |
|
|
Programs under the umbrella of the Social Justice Committee include the monthly CARES dinner, Change for the World (CFTW), the Mozambique Bursary project and the UUCV Antiracism Initiative. Another component this year has been assisting an Afghan family as they transition to America from war-torn Afghanistan. Other events we regularly participate in include Project Share’s Farm Stand, the annual Pride Festival in Harrisburg, National Public Lands Day, and United Way’s One Day of Caring. We anchor our efforts around UUCV’s mission to transform lives and care for the world. Thank you to all who serve on the committee and for outside support we receive from many others in the congregation.
The next Social Justice meeting is at 6:30 on Wednesday, June 21 in the board room. All are welcome to join our meetings. |

What is Intersectionality?
From www.dictionary.com com -“ The theory that the overlap of various social identities, as race, gender, sexuality, and class, contributes to the specific type of systemic oppression and discrimination experienced by an individual.”
From www.meriam-webster.com - “The complex, cumulative way in which the effects of multiple forms of discrimination (such as racism, sexism, and classism) combine, overlap, or intersect, especially in the experiences of marginalized individuals or groups.
Kimberlé Crenshaw introduced the theory of intersectionality, the idea that when it comes to thinking about how inequalities persist, categories like gender, race, and class are best understood as overlapping and mutually constitutive rather than isolated and distinct. — Adia Harvey Wingfield”
From a CNN.com report entitled “‘Intersectionality’ has become a hot-button topic in recent years. Here’s what it means”. Asale Angel-Ajani, director of the women’s and gender studies program at the City College of New York states - “Intersectionality does not imply that this person is more or less oppressed than someone else. Instead, it’s trying to understand how multiple identities can affect how someone experiences the world around them in different ways.”
From en.wikipedia.org - Intersectionality is an analytical framework for understanding how a person's various social and political identities combine to create different modes of discrimination and privilege. Intersectionality identifies multiple factors of advantage and disadvantage.[1] Examples of these factors include gender, caste, sex, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, religion, disability, weight, and physical appearance.[2] These intersecting and overlapping social identities may be both empowering and oppressing.[3][4]
We each carry a particular array of the various social identities listed in the information above. Looking at our identities through an intersectional lens asks that we consider these factors in combination with each other rather than considering each one in isolation. Our various combinations impact our life experience, our level of privilege or oppression, how we view the world, and how the world views us. For instance an older black female would have a vastly different life experience from a younger white male. Someone with a disability might have trouble finding work. If that person is also Latino would that further affect their ability to find work?
Our 8th Principle calls us to the task of dismantling oppression and building Beloved Community. The tool of Intersectionality gives us the possibility of seeing the different life experiences our unique profiles provide each of us. This broadened understanding has the potential to help improve our ability to engage with those different from ourselves and move further toward the goals of the 8th Principle.

News from the Mozambique Bursary
Cyclone Freddy did tremendous damage to Mozambique’s infrastructure when it hit the country in early 2023. Nevertheless, the forty-two Bursary students in Molumbo and the sixty students in Nammaroi are thriving as they pursue their studies. So are the seven Molumbo and Nammaroi graduates who are studying health, education, or agronomy in professional schools.
|
|
|
|
|
Your Bursary contributions allow these girls, citizens of one of the world’s poorest countries, to achieve their dreams of an education. $350 dollars provides room and board, school uniforms and supplies, and hygiene materials for one year. Your donations also pay the salaries of the housemothers who mentor the girls throughout the year. Below, you can see our Project Officer, Sonia Assane Sauale, distributing supplies to the Nammaroi girls on her recent visit.
Dianne Dusman and Susan Rimby will be visiting Mozambique in early September to see our program in action. It’s not too late to get in on this opportunity. Travelers should be in excellent health and prepared to rough it. Please contact one of us if you are interested in participating.

John Terlazzo and Voices in the Hall return to UUCV for an Evening of Original Song
On Saturday, June 3rd at 7 PM, Singer-Songwriter John Terlazzo (Yes,
that John Terlazzo, married to Rev. Cindy Terlazzo!) will return with his band for another evening of Original Songs. You may remember their last performance here at UUCV just before the arrival of the Pandemic three years ago. John is featured, singing his songs and playing guitar and harmonium, and accompanied by Kristina Machusick on flute, recorders and harmony vocals, Paul Wegmann on harmony vocals & lead guitar and JD Stillwater on percussion. Together they will perform songs from John's vast catalog spanning from the 1970s to the present, including new and unrecorded selections. Suggested Donation is $5 - $20 per person. More than half of the door will benefit the UUCV.
"
Terlazzo belongs to the same lineage of songpoets as Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, but also the 15th century’s John Dowland, Virgil of the first century B.C., and Homer from an even earlier time...it feels good to hear the pure poetic muscle Terlazzo brings to bear, and be reassured that somebody still knows how to sling it".

Rolling Stone, Billboard, NPR Music, Culture Sonar and the
Village Voice.
