From the Minister

My dear friends,

Yes, I am already referring to you as my dear friends, even if we do not know each other
well, even if we have not yet met. You and I are siblings in this one wild and precious
faith (to misquote Mary Oliver!) and I am happy to embrace anyone who embraces
Unitarian Universalism.

So my dear friends, I want to thank you for welcoming me into your sacred space. After
the difficulties of the past few years, it would be understandable for your heart to be
closed and for your ability to trust and love to be covered over with scar tissue.  I want you to know that as I prepare to step into your UUCV pulpit, I recognize what an
incredible gift you give me. Opening a bruised heart is no small thing.

So my prayer for you as I step into the very fancy shoes of my predecessors is that you
give yourself time to heal before you expect yourself to grow. May my words be
nourishing to your soul. Together, let’s make room for healing, forgiving the
imperfections in ourselves and in each other.

This church year, we will be looking at our spiritual growth through the green lens of
gardening, adding a vibrant theme of cultivation and growth to our Sunday worship
services. The theme of the year, The Garden of Our Hearts, will be split into three
parts: Radical Rooting, Tending Toward Growth, and finally an Honorable Harvest. In
this way, we turn both toward our own inward growth as well as turning outward with
open arms to embrace a hurting world.

Please feel free to contact me at minister@uucv.net. Don’t be shy! I would love to have
a conversation and get to know you, and let you get to know me. I am in the office Weds
through Friday and I can also accommodate your schedule by planning an evening or
weekend time to meet. In fact, I would love to do just that. Prefer a phone call or a
zoom meeting? That works for me too! Please reach out. I look forward to getting to
know you!

With so much love,
Rev. Meg

UUCV Book Group

The UUCV Book Discussion group meets via Zoom on the 4th Sunday of each month at 6:30 pm. Dates and titles can be found on our website: https://uucv.org/fellowship/book-group/ . Please join us for a lively discussion, newcomers are always welcome!

The selection for August 28th is “The Song of Achilles'' by Madeline Miller. Set in Ancient Greece, this book introduces readers to an unparalleled young warrior and a young prince in exile who would eventually become legends. Their relationship grows as they are trained in the arts of war, but no amount of time in the practice ring could prepare them for what the Trojan War would mean for the both of them.

Please email Pam at UUCV (pam@uucv.net) or the Book Discussion coordinator, Riley Johnson (riles1806@gmail.com) if you have any questions.

Mozambique

News From the Mozambique Bursary Committee

Meet Neide! She attends the Molumbo Boarding Center, one of the two supported by the Bursary Committee. Neide is among the youngest girls at the school, but has some of the best grades. Neide is very intelligent, asks a lot of questions, and expresses herself well. Unlike many of her classmates, Neide is interested in non-traditional professions for women.

Your gifts to the UUCV Mozambique Bursary Committee provide opportunities for girls like Neide that their families and communities can’t provide. The Committee thanks our donors for their generous support.

Titos Macie, the Bursary Committee Program Office congratulates Neide on her excellent grades.

Change for the World
3rd Quarter July - September

International Service Center

ISC

The CFTW charity for July through September is the International Service Center (ISC), located at S. River St, in Harrisburg.  ISC promotes educational, cultural, social, and economic programs to help disadvantaged and underprivileged people of different cultural and language backgrounds, to become self supporting and productive members of our pluralistic society.  As of September 15, more than 23,000 Afghan refugees arrived in the U.S. Since that time, the ISC and a small group of volunteers have been working hard to address the needs of about 60 desperate Afghan clients who came to this area.  Local churches and other organizations, including UUCV, formed teams to help these families find homes, jobs, learn our language and customs, and guide them through medical, financial, and emotional situations, and help them solve many other problems.

The 8th Principle

“Journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” www.8thprincipleuu.org

In January of this year UUCV began a process toward the goal of voting on adopting the 8th Principle on September 18, 2022. There were plans for a variety of learning activities to allow members of the congregation to come to a deeper understanding of the 8th Principle. While some of those activities happened, it was necessary to put a pause on the full scope of them as UUCV successfully dealt with a series of unexpected challenges.

Now UUCV continues to be in a period of transition as we welcome Rev Meg and Jyoti as they join Pam and Devon to, once again, give us a full staff. They come with new ideas for programming, attracting new members, and enriching UUCV. Along with being exciting, this comes with a period of adjustment as we get to know each other and absorb the newness that change always brings.

It is also exciting that Rev Meg strongly supports the 8th Principle and over the past year helped steer her previous congregation toward a vote in June to adopt the 8th Principle. Those of us at UUCV who have been working toward having our congregation adopt the 8th Principle remain committed to that process. However, because of the interruptions we’ve experienced and the changes at UUCV in the past several months, it does not feel appropriate to hold a vote on September 18. Consideration of the 8th Principle deserves time and attention that we have not yet been able to give it.

The committee is actively working with Rev Meg and Gail Black to reconfigure UUCV’s journey toward adopting the 8th Principle. We would be delighted to welcome anyone interested in joining us in this important work. If this sparks your interest, please contact Wendy Gebb at wendywinter@comcast.net

UUCV Announcements

Welcome to our new Minister

Rev. Meg Mathieson is thrilled to serve UUCV as their minister. She is also a candidate for a Doctorate of Ministry through the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA.  Rev. Meg is currently writing a dissertation with the working title "Unitarian Mindfulness" which looks at the place of Mindful Self-Compassion within the future of our beloved denomination.

A proud mom of 3 adult children and a border collie, Rev. Meg was brought up in a conservative Christian household. Originally Episcopalian, her family converted to Eastern Orthodoxy and her father became an ordained Eastern Orthodox priest. After 25 years in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Rev. Meg found herself unfulfilled with conservative Christianity. She discovered Unitarian Universalism in 2011, and experienced a feeling that is familiar to many UU converts: astonishment that my lifelong beliefs and philosophies were honored in this beautiful tradition.  ("Other people believe this too?  And it's already a religion?  Where has this been all my life?!") A true agnostic, Rev. Meg has a deep love and respect for all love-based faith traditions, and she affirms that there is no "correct" path up the mountain. She experiences the holy as a beautiful spark of divinity within each living thing, and her theology could be best described as panentheism.  Rev. Meg is a practitioner and teacher of both Mindful Self-Compassion and Laughter Yoga.

Rev. Meg and her wife Nicky live in Dillsburg with their elderly border collie, Cricket, where they enjoy gardening, hiking, reading and laughing, and a "cottage-core" lifestyle.

Grocery Card Win-Win

Purchase a Grocery Card from UUCV and donate to ECYEH
Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness

This is a reminder of another way to support UUCV and contribute to our mission of transforming lives and caring for the world. For several years UUCV has been collecting donations for grocery cards that are then given to ECYEH (Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness) in what we call our Win-WIn grocery card program.

Small things can make a big difference. Our Win-Win grocery card program provides much needed help to ECYEH clients and UUCV gets a $10 donation for each $100 Giant card purchased.

Here’s how the plan works if you are able to make a donation:

• Please mail donations to Pam Martin at UUCV, PO Box 207, Boiling Springs, PA 17007. Donations can also be dropped off to Pam during office hours or placed in the offering baskets on Sunday.

• Donations need to be checks made out to UUCV, and in denominations of $25, $50, $75, or $100.

• Checks should have ECYEH marked in the memo line.

• Donations will be combined toward the purchase of $100 Giant cards as these provide a $10 return to UUCV.

• The grocery cards will then be given to ECYEH.

• Your donation will be recorded on your annual tax statement from UUCV.

From Sonia Pitzi, the coordinator for our region’s Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness (ECYEH) program, “Thank you never seems big enough to express how grateful we are that you have chosen us to receive your hard earned dollars. Yet, know that I say THANK YOU with the biggest hug attached.”
