In The Interim w/ Rev. Craig |
|
|
|
Every month, when I prepare my report for the Board of Trustees, I follow the same format. I start with a TLDR Summary (Too Long Didn't Read) that summarizes the important things and requests I may have for the Board. Sometimes, folks just don't have the time to read all of the reports before a meeting and I think it helps to give them a quick summary so they know the gist of things. Then I report on the following interim goals:
|
|
|
|
|
Connect & Orient Honor History Explore Identity
Develop Leadership Denominational Engagement Prepare for New Ministry
These are the goals we are working on together in the next two interim years we have together. After reporting on all those, then I report on my UUCV Ministries:
Worship Pastoral Care Staff Support Committee Support
Programming Social Justice Community Self Care
I include Self-Care because it is so important, for ministers, for staff, and for everyone! And having folks you are accountable for, who will make sure you are doing the important work, is helpful.
This month, I thought I'd share some thoughts with the congregation in a few of those areas.
Connect & Orient – I've really been enjoying delivering the blessing tokens to those who have asked me to do so. Even when we don't see each other and I just drop them off at your house, driving there and back is helping me learn my way around and is giving a stronger sense of place. Occasionally, folks are home when I drop off the blessings and that's even better. Then I get to match a face to the name and the place and sometimes Spirit and I even get a chance to visit for a while. If you have signed up for a blessing token delivery, please know I'm working on them slowly but surely. If you haven't signed up and would like to, the link is here https://uucv.org/2021/09/12/2021-backpack-blessing-tokens/
Honoring History / Worship – Our worship theme for October is “Remembering”. I'll be doing a series of worship services (10/10, 10/17, and 10/24) that tells the story of Unitarian Universalism, explores the story of UUCV, and honors those who helped us get here. I'll be setting up some gatherings on zoom (and in person, if it is safe to do so) to give folks a chance to tell me the stories of UUCV and share memories and stories of important figures in UUCV's history. Join me Sunday (10/3) at 3:00 p.m. or Wednesday (10/13) at 11:00 a.m. for these UUCV Story Circles. I look forward to hearing and telling stories with you. ZOOM link
Denominational Engagement / Pastoral Care – As I've mentioned before, I am a member of the Unitarian Universalist Trauma Response Ministry team. UUTRM is a volunteer organization that provides resources, education, and support to UU congregations who have experienced a trauma or are working to promote their preparedness and resiliency. Occasionally, I get asked by UUTRM to respond and provide support to a UU congregation in need. Often, I am contacted when a congregation has experienced a suicide or a violent death. (My experience and training is in this area.) I have been working with a congregation dealing with this sort of trauma for the past few weeks. (Zoom has made it easier to respond without having to travel to their location.) Whenever I am deployed by UUTRM, I always inform the UUCV staff and the Board President. My ministry to these congregations in need is an extension of your ministry to our wider movement. I always bring greetings from my current congregation (UUCV) to the congregation I'm helping. This reduces the sense of isolation they may be feeling and reminds them that they are part of a greater family of UU's, a family that cares and wants to give them support and assistance. Thank you for allowing me to continue this important ministry as I serve as your Interim Minister. The two congregations I've responded to since August also send their deep gratitude for your ministry to them.
Cooperatively, with Love and Gratitude,
Rev. Craig

October Worship
October 3 - "Let Justice Roll Down, and Out and Around"
Reflections on justice in our US and UU histories and strategies for moving justice forward in our PA General Assembly. The service will include a call to join in our work and opportunities to take action. Guest Minister Rev. Joan M. Sabatino, Director, UUJusticePA will lead the service with worship associate Cheryl Parsons.
Justice Roots; Just Possibilities, Rev. Joan M. Sabatino, Minister Emerita First UU Church of Indiana & UUPLAN Director of Legislative Affairs
Rev. Joan will share her thoughts on the role of justice embedded in the roots of our Unitarian Universalist faith. With these roots as our foundation, she will suggest how on we can stand tall and firm in our UU values, based on our UU principles, as we move justice forward in PA.
About our Guest Speaker: Rev. Joan M. Sabatino served as Minister of the First UU Church in Indiana, PA for over fifteen years. During that time, she and the congregation worked together to change their image in the community by being a consistent legitimate voice for liberal religion in a small, conservative western PA town. Consequently, First UU grew significantly. The congregation granted her Emerita status upon her retirement in June 2019,
While in Indiana, PA Joan co-created and co-chaired the Center for Community Growth a progressive advocacy group. The Center helped elect several UUs to the Indiana Borough Council, the Indiana Area School Board, and a County Commissioner.
She is the mother of three adult daughters, has one 11-year-old grandson and two infant granddaughters born three weeks apart this summer. She has moved to Harrisburg in 2019 to take her job with UUJusticePA. She lives a quick 15 minute walk to the Capital in a small row house with her dog Lady.
October 10 - "Once Upon a Time - Unitarian Universalism - Part 1" All stories have a beginning, an origin, a “once upon a time.” Come here the origin stories we tell of our faith tradition, Unitarian Universalism. Rev. Craig Schwalenberg preaches with worship associate Julie Ham.
October 17 - "Once Upon a Time - Unitarian Universalism - Part 2" What's this congregation's origin story? I can't tell it-- I just got here. So, we'll have to tell the story together. The more tellers, the better the tale. (Let me know what you would include, if you were telling the story.) Rev. Craig Schwalenberg preaches with worship associate Cheryl Parsons.
October 24 - "The Invisible Choir“ O May I join the choir invisible; Of those immortal dead who live again In minds made better by their presence...” writes poet, George Eliot. We know many who were here but are now gone-- who left their mark upon us. Let's remember them, name them, honor them, and thank them. Rev. Craig Schwalenberg preaches with worship associate Ben Ramirez.
October 31 - "Celebrating Samhain: Honoring the Earth" An earth-based service calling on the four directions. Samhain. Dot Everhart and Riley Johnson lead the service with worship associate Kristen Markley.

Goodbye Exterior Door Keys --
Hello New Access System!!
|
|
|
|
|
A new access system is one of the changes we’re making at UUCV to increase safety and security. For years, the traditional door keys have resulted in dozens of lost keys and occasional rekeying of the locks in the building. The new computerized system will bring UUCV into the modern era and allow better control of who accesses the building at what time.
How will the access system work?
The access system will be installed only on the parking lot door by the office. All other doors will remain locked to general use. A computer database will hold the names of everyone authorized to enter the building outside of office hours or Sunday mornings. That includes staff, Board members, committee chairs, and on a temporary basis those organizing events (such as a potlucks), performing tasks (such as mowing), or renting an area. When someone scans their card the computer will verify authorization, unlock the door, record the time and the authorized user’s name, and automatically relock the door when it closes. As always, all are welcome during office hours. Buzz and speak with Pam via the new intercom and she can unlock the door.
*All interior keys will remain the same (offices, secure areas, and committee closets).
What should you do if you need this building access?
1. Return your “C” key to Pam.
2. Have Pam enter your name and reason for access into the access system.
3. You will be issued a coded pass card. A $5 deposit will be collected, to cover the cost of the card should it be lost.
4. To use the system for entry - swipe your pass card on the door device.
5. When you no longer need the card, return the card and the $5 deposit will be refunded. *Cards can be deactivated when a temporary need has expired.
Yes, we will all have a learning curve!
Please, be gentle with Pam as she helps us make this transition.

UUCV Auction News
Fall is here. Nice days and cool nights. The leaves will soon be turning and drives and hikes through the mountains to view the scenery is a must.
|
|
|
|
|
Fall is also the time of year we are thinking of our auction. The UUCV News reported that the first auction will be online with something of twist. That’s a fact, and you will learn more at auction kick-off. I know we all donated all sorts of things to the yard sale. I’m hoping you all saved back some of the more treasured or unusual items for the online auction.
That’s all for now and look forward to seeing you all on Zoom for the auction kick-off.

Change For The World - October through December
UUJusticePA challenges Pennsylvania Unitarian Universalists to be aware of justice issues, and calls us to speak and take action that leads to a better Commonwealth.
They believe in pursuing justice by voting, advocating and making just public policies.
Their approach recognizes and focuses on four key intersectional priorities to strategically build power for creating justice at this time.
1. Climate justice, inclusive of indigenous sovereignty and climate resilience 2. Anti-criminalization, inclusive of racial justice and immigrant justice and the criminalization of poverty 3. LGBTQ and gender justice, inclusive of LGTBQ equity and reproductive justice 4. Electoral justice, inclusive of voting and voting rights, democracy and election year engagement.
UUJusticePA is working for real change for real people. To help sustain the fight for justice for all in Pennsylvania, they ask that we consider joining or making a donation. Free email list are available, which will provide Action Alerts, social justice news, and other vital information.

Anti-Racism Musings
We are all aware of the 7 Principles of Unitarian Universalism, but what about the 8th Principle? More than likely most of us haven’t heard of this and it is probably time that we learned some details about it. The 8th Principle is currently being discussed and considered for adoption by the UUA and will need to come up for a vote at two

consecutive General Assemblies in order to become officially adopted and added to the 7 Principles. Meanwhile, individual congregations are taking the initiative to adopt the 8th Principle and at least 117 UU congregations have done so. UUCV’s Antiracism Initiative and Board of Directors would like to begin the process of UUCV adopting this important addition to our 7 Principles. The UUA has no mandated protocol for adopting the 8th Principle, but a first step is for each of us to gather information about what the 8th Principle is, where it came from, and what it hopes to achieve. Please take a few minutes to visit the website 8thprincipleuu.org where you will find a wealth information. To get you started the 8th Principle is We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”
At our recent Antiracism Initiative discussion with Rev. Craig, we focused on the current misinformation that is causing considerable mayhem at local school board meetings. Under the inappropriately applied label of Critical Race Theory, parents are being fearful of efforts to support diversity and inclusion, as well as expanding American history to reflect the significant contributions of People of Color. Discussion of the role of race and racism in American history is also portrayed as Teaching our children they are inferior or inherently bad based on immutable characteristics such as race and sex, which can be extremely damaging to their emotional and mental well-being.” There is even legislation pending in the PA State House, as in many other states, aimed at curtailing the divisive nature” of concepts that have become known as critical race theory.” Whether or not we have children currently enrolled in public schools, we can be a voice of reason. Please consider contacting your local school board to express our UU values and speak up against fear and for the People of Color who need us as allies.
Also, please investigate the Pa Legislation – House Bill 1532 – the Teaching Racial and Universal Equality (TRUE) Act, for yourself and weigh in with your state representative.
The UUCV Antiracism Initiative is meeting monthly. All are invited and encouraged to attend. Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 17 at 1:30 pm on Zoom. Please mark your calendar now and look for further details in PreViews closer the date.

A Win-Win Opportunity Reminder
In the words of Sonia Pitzi, the Region 3 coordinator for Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness (ECYEH), “I cant express my gratitude enough! These gift cards have been such a huge blessing this year!”
Last year UUCV started a program where those of us that are able make donations toward purchasing Giant grocery cards from UUCV that are then given to ECYEH. The win-win is that Giant donates a portion of the value of each card to UUCV and ECYEH gets much needed support to distribute to their clients.
This is a friendly reminder that this Win-Win program is still active and the need for our support of ECYEH continues, so here’s how the plan works if you are able to make a donation:
• Donations need to be mailed to Pam Martin at UUCV, PO Box 207, Boiling Springs, PA 17007.
• Donations need to be checks made out to UUCV, and only in denominations of $25, $50, $75, or $100.
• Checks should have ECYEH marked in the memo line.
• Donations will be combined toward the purchase of $100 Giant cards as these offer the best return to UUCV.
• The grocery cards will then be given to ECYEH.
• Your donation will be recorded on your annual tax statement from UUCV
Thank You!!

Save the Date - Sunday, November 7 |
|
|
In late August, our south-central Pennsylvania students returned to in-person school after spending much of 2020-21 learning remotely. Our Bursary students at Molumbo and Namarroi have already been hard at work, having returned to school earlier in 2021.
|
|
|
|
|
Your generous Bursary contributions have supplied the girls with school uniforms and hygiene, Covid-prevention, and educational supplies. This year your donations have also paid for tutors who helped the girls improve their knowledge of Portuguese, math, and science. Tutoring was necessary for girls, who had no opportunity to learn while the Bursary schools were closed.
Join us for worship on November 7th to learn more about UUCV’s life-changing social justice project in Mozambique. And keep reading the newsletter and Pre-Views to learn about how YOU can make a difference for the young women served by the Bursary.
