From the Board of Trustees |
Greetings to all.
I feel the need to reflect some on the state of the world we live in today and to suggest how we can best contribute to change for the better. We have watched with great sadness the events unfold in Ukraine and Israel. It seems to be the same old story of violence and revenge.
Throughout human history leaders have failed to see that dominance, violence and depravation do not result in greater friendship and cooperation. One side feels the need to make a statement by committing a horrendous act of violence and the other side seeks revenge. The cycle goes on until one side or the other gets tired of the impacts. However, when that side is defeated, the anger doesn’t end.
The potential for more violence continues. What can we do about this insanity? We can vote, send letters and assist humanitarian aid organizations. What else can we do? I believe we can reflect on our own actions and behavior. All of us have experienced conflict of some kind. We should ask ourselves, could I have managed those situations better? Did I take the time to understand the other person or persons point of view? I have been privy to conflicts within our own community. In all cases those conflicts were resolved without physical violence. However, I cannot say hurt feelings were avoided. Could things have gone differently if people on all sides practiced some self-reflection? That is something to think about.
Jim Burton, President, UUCV Board of Trustees

The Worship theme for
November is GENEROSITY |

November 5 – "The Light of Change" I have been a fan of Holly Near for over forty years. But I didn’t know that she was a lot more than a singer songwriter. We will examine her life and learn more about her including her social justice work. Come prepared to sing and learn. Rev. Dr. Richard Speck preaches with worship associate Susan Green
About our Guest Minister: The Reverend Doctor Richard Speck is the retired District Executive for the Joseph Priestley District (JPD) of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations. He was named Minister Emeritus in 2019. Previously, he served nine years as minister to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach, FL, before coming to the JPD in 2000 as Acting District Executive. In his last two years in Florida he also served as the music director for the church. He graduated from Meadville/Lombard Theological School with a Doctorate in Ministry in 1990. He was hired as the regular District Executive in 2001. He served fourteen years as DE before retiring from full time ministry in 2014. Richard continues to be active in social justice programs like the Black Lives Matters and The Coalition to Dismantle the New Jim Crow in Delaware. He conducts weddings, memorial services, and funerals and continues preaching in area congregations. He has served as Treasurer of the UU Ministers Association twice, finishing his second three-year term in 2020. He is currently treasurer of the UU Retired Ministers and Partners Association. He also served as Treasurer for the Priestley Kingsbury UUMA for the last six years.
Richard became a Unitarian Universalist as a layperson in Springfield, IL, in 1974. He was an active lay member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham, AL, before going into the ministry. In that congregation he held a variety of leadership positions (vice president, secretary, canvasser, choir member, lay delegate) and was active in the social life of the church.
Richard’s career before the ministry was as a respiratory therapist for eighteen years. The last ten years before seminary were spent in Birmingham as the director of a respiratory care department in a large hospital where he supervised over 30 people in multiple divisions of the department. He earned a MA in health care administration in 1976 as part of this career. He left health care to pursue new avenues of serving humanity through the ministry.
He is married to Janet Tillman and resides in Wilmington, DE. He enjoys making music, flying his own airplane, and creating stained glass art. Janet and Richard have one cat.
November 12 – “Sharing Culture, Sharing Light” Just as Diwali celebrates light, we celebrate the light that experiencing other cultures can bring to our spirits. Join us as we celebrate diwali and Moz culture with our Mozambique team. Rev. Chris Kapp leads the service.
November 19 - "Gratitude and Hope" Join us for a very special all-ages worship services in celebration of Thanksgiving. One of our UU shared values is Generosity. Let us reflect on the ways that we embrace generosity with gratitude and hope. Lynn Sodora leads the service with our children and yuuth as worship associates.
November 26 – "Building Walls, Mending Walls" Join us for Outreach Sunday as we take a deeper look at Robert Frost's Poem, "Mending Wall" Michael Fratantuono leads the service with members of our Outreach Committee as worship associates.
Join us for in-person worship in our Sanctuary or on ZOOM. or “listen in” (without video) by telephone, by calling 646-876-9923 and entering Meeting ID 550 751 6685 |

November Social Justice Opportunities |

Programs under the umbrella of the Social Justice Committee include the monthly CARES dinner, Change for the World (CFTW), the Mozambique Bursary project and the UUCV Antiracism Initiative. Another component this year has been assisting an Afghan family as they transition to America from war-torn Afghanistan. Other events we regularly participate in include Project Share’s Farm Stand, the annual Pride Festival in Harrisburg, National Public Lands Day, and United Way’s One Day of Caring. We anchor our efforts around UUCV’s mission to transform lives and care for the world. Thank you to all who serve on the committee and for outside support we receive from many others in the congregation.

Change for the World -
4th Quarter October - December
The Good Karma Repair Garage "Working Class Hero Program" |
Good Karma Garage creates a welcoming and inclusive environment where "non-car" people can feel heard and assists financially struggling neighbors in Central Pennsylvania to ensure they have a safe vehicle with which to earn a living. They will help you with any repairs or maintenance that you need and work with you to find an affordable solution, so your car remains safe and provides you with transportation for the full life of the vehicle. You will never be talked down to or sold costly parts you do not need.
As a non-profit company, a large portion of Good Karma Garage’s proceeds goes into supporting the community through their Working-Class Hero Program. Aimed at people who are currently working or disabled and struggling to make ends meet, this program is set up to deal with the surprise repairs that arise during the annual vehicle safety inspection. Program participants pay only the cost of the inspection. Good Karma Garage covers the cost of parts and labor to make the necessary repairs to bring the vehicle into compliance with PA state standards. They partner with social organizations such as churches, social services providers, veteran groups, and the like to identify deserving people who could benefit from this program. Their all-volunteer staff makes this work possible.

UU Justice PA continues to lobby to Raise the Minimum Wage and to include funding in the budget code bills for Whole Home Repairs, Workers' Rights to Organize, Medical Debt Relief, and not to increase ineffectively utilized funding for school vouchers.

A Win-Win Opportunity
UUCV has been actively supporting homeless individuals and families in our area with our some of our Change for the World contributions, donations of needed items and supplies when there is a need, and providing a monthly meal for Community CARES.
There are also many homeless youth in our area who are on their own and could really benefit from our support. The organization Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness (ECYEH) actively provides multiple types of support for these young people and having adequate food is an ongoing issue. So, what can we do?
Many of us purchase grocery cards from UUCV and know that a portion of the value of each card is donated to UUCV by the grocery store. The WIn-Win idea is that any of us who are able to could make a donation toward the purchase of a grocery card from UUCV that would be donated to ECYEH to purchase food and supplies. Both UUCV and ECYEH would benefit, and we would be actively living our mission of caring for the world.
Here’s how the plan works if you are able to make a donation:
• Donations need to be given to or mailed to Pam Martin at UUCV, PO Box 207, Boiling Springs, PA 17007.
• Donations need to be checks made out to UUCV, and only in denominations of $25, $50, $75, or $100.
• Checks should have ECYEH marked in the memo line.
• Donations will be combined toward the purchase of $100 Giant cards as these offer the best return to UUCV.
• The grocery cards will then be given to ECYEH.
• Your donation will be recorded on your annual tax statement from UUCV
THANK YOU!

November 19: Sufism - Belief & Practices Come participate in an experiential class. Brian McPherson will guide you through a meditation session based on Sufi practices. Afterwards participants will have a chance to give feedback and discuss their experience. Discussion leader: Brian McPherson.
December 3: The Hidden History of the Oligarchy (Video + Discussion) The United States was born in a struggle against the oligarchs of the British aristocracy, and ever since then the history of America has been one of dynamic tension between democracy and oligarchy, asserts author Thom Hartmann. Pulling from his book The Hidden History of American Oligarchy: Reclaiming Our Democracy from the Ruling Class, Hartmann joins us via livestream to trace the history of this struggle, from America’s founding to the United States’ war with the feudal Confederacy to President Franklin Roosevelt’s struggle against “economic royalists,” who wanted to block the New Deal. While the oligarchs lost the battle in all of those cases, Hartmann argues that increasing right-wing control of the media, unlimited campaign
contributions, and a conservative takeover of the judicial system means we’re now at a crisis point. Hartmann lays out practical measures we can take that he contends will break up media monopolies, limit the influence of money in politics, reclaim the wealth stolen over decades by the oligarchy, and build a movement that will return control of America to “We the People.” Discussion leader: Cheryl Parsons.
December 17: TBD Discussion leader: Keith Bittinger.
