SEPTEMBER 2023 Newsletter

From the Board of Trustees

Fellow UUCVers, most of you heard my words on Sunday at the Town Hall.  For those who haven't, myself and the rest of the board believe this resilient and loving community will face our upcoming challenges in the same effective and successful manner we have faced past challenges.

Rev Meg is no longer our minister as of Aug 9th.  She notified the board in the form of a letter which indicated she felt no longer capable of serving the community and its needs.  We know Rev Meg has been experiencing illness which has prevented her from attending to the UUCV needs over the last month.  We wish Rev Meg well and hope she recovers quickly.  Any who would like to send her get well cards or notes of appreciation, feel free to do so.  I know they would be appreciated. Contact Pam for Rev. Meg's address.

The loss of a minister is not new to UUCV.  We know how to deal with this particular situation. We will initially become a lay led community.  We have a number of members of the congregation who have successfully led services as well as an ordained minister, Rev Chris Kapp, who can help guide us through the ministerial issues we will face.  In the very near term, the month of September, UUCV services are planned and leaders selected.  Longer term planning, out to the end of December, is in the process.   We will be forming a search committee to select a new settled minister.  The selection process will take up to 30 months.  In the meantime, small group (cottage) meetings will be conducted in the Oct-Nov timeframe to inform the longer term planning decisions.

Committees are in great need of membership and leadership.  The board members will be approaching people to join or to lead some of these committees.  We are forming a new fundraising committee which will be critical to ensure the community meets budgeted goals for fundraising. Some of the committees consist of one member.  The more people signing up for a committee the better the chances the committee will meet budgeted goals.  But, it is not just about money.  Joining a committee offers the opportunity to get to know other members of the community, outside of the social hall.  It helps to strengthen bonds between all of us.  Join up, before we ask you to.  You will be surprised what it will do for you as well as the community.

Worship this Month

The Worship theme for
September is WELCOME

September  3 – "Checking in"  It's the start of a new school year, a new church year -- even though the calander says it's still 2023, it's a season of change and renewal. How can we check in with ourselves and each other to make the most of this pivotal time? Rev.Chris Kapp preaches.with worship associate Brent Dickerson.

September 10 – “Water Ceremony: A Service for All”  This Sunday we will celebrate our annual Water Communion.  Please bring a small container of water that symbolizes something special from your summer adventures.  This could be water from a summer vacation spot, or water from your backyard.  It could be water from your garden hose, or water from your favorite place to swim.  From the ocean, a lake, or from your home tap.  We will combine our waters in a common bowl as we embark on a new congregational year together. Lynn Sodora preaches with worship associate Rev. Chris Kapp.

September 17 - "Yes, and..."  Conjunction Junction, are our words construction or dysfunction? Learn how a mindset shift from 'yes, but' to 'yes, and' can fuel optimism and growth, build bridges and open hearts. Rev. Chris Kapp preaches with worship associate Brent Dickerson.

September 24 – Julie Ham preaches with worship associate Cheryl Parsons.  Service details to follow.

Join us for in-person worship in our Sanctuary or on ZOOM. or “listen in” (without video) by telephone, by calling 646-876-9923 and entering Meeting ID 550 751 6685

The Period Project Harrisburg Megan Swope, theperiodprojecthbg@gmail.com

The Period Project Harrisburg’s mission is to eradicate period poverty in the Harrisburg area and raise awareness about its impact on the dignity and health of our community. They take action through community engagement and direct intervention with the unsheltered and those in need.

The term period poverty refers to the fact that monthly menstruation management is a struggle for many individuals globally. Menstruation inequity refers to the need for a public policy to address the safety, affordability, and availability of menstrual products for everyone who needs them.

For some, the cost of supplies are a financial burden or out of reach due to homelessness. Currently, state and federal funds (EBT card) cannot be used to purchase sanitary supplies.

Supporting The Period Project Harrisburg aligns with our first UU principal to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

UUJusticePA

To date, UUJusticePA is $12,000 short in meeting our annual budget

Analysis of our three types of income (share the plate/congregational donations, grants, and individual donations) show that individual donations are falling short of what we need to cover our expenses.  To remedy this situation we are kicking off a fundraising campaign called Potluck for PA that aims to close that gap!

Have you ever noticed how potlucks just always seem to work out?  Everybody brings what they have. What they want to share. From small contributions to large ones, and everything in between.  And somehow, as if by magic…there’s suddenly a feast. There’s diversity and celebration. Everyone gets fed – and in abundance!  That’s the idea behind Potluck for PA, our 2023 summer-into-fall fundraiser.

We’re asking everyone, quite simply, to give what they canFrom $10 to $20 to $50 or more. If we all chip in, those donations will fill our virtual basket – and nourish our justice work through the end of this year!  We plan to be recharged and ready this fall, when the PA Legislature is back in session.

If life is indeed a potluck, UUJusticePA believes that justice deserves a seat at the table. Our campaign runs from now through September 30th. Thanks for your commitment to UUJusticePA, our state government advocacy network, as we work to close the gap in our annual budget!

8th Principle Actions

“Journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” www.8thprincipleuu.org

As we enter a time in the life of UUCV where each of our contributions to the health and well being of our congregation is more important than ever, I’m asking you to consider being an 8th Note Presenter. 8th Notes have been a part of our Sunday Service since January 2023 when we adopted the 8th Principle. It is a time for learning about the history, viewpoint, or creative work of those who have been “othered" by our culture; for bringing them out of the margins and into our full awareness.

If you have a favorite poet, a beloved songwriter, an interest in history, a passion for discovering fascinating people and their contributions, you are perfect for presenting an 8th Note. Please consider sharing your interest and enriching our Sunday Services with your contribution.

Thank you,

Wendy

A Win-Win Opportunity

UUCV has been actively supporting homeless individuals and families in our area with our some of our Change for the World contributions, donations of needed items and supplies when there is a need, and providing a monthly meal for Community CARES.

There are also many homeless youth in our area who are on their own and could really benefit from our support. The organization Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness (ECYEH) actively provides multiple types of support for these young people and having adequate food is an ongoing issue. So, what can we do?

Many of us purchase grocery cards from UUCV and know that a portion of the value of each card is donated to UUCV by the grocery store. The WIn-Win idea is that any of us who are able to could make a donation toward the purchase of a grocery card from UUCV that would be donated to ECYEH to purchase food and supplies. Both UUCV and ECYEH would benefit, and we would be actively living our mission of caring for the world.

Here’s how the plan works if you are able to make a donation:

• Donations need to be given to or mailed to Pam Martin at UUCV, PO Box 207, Boiling Springs, PA 17007.

• Donations need to be checks made out to UUCV, and only in denominations of $25, $50, $75, or $100.

• Checks should have ECYEH marked in the memo line.

• Donations will be combined toward the purchase of $100 Giant cards as these offer the best return to UUCV.

• The grocery cards will then be given to ECYEH.

• Your donation will be recorded on your annual tax statement from UUCV

THANK YOU!

Religious Education

Greetings all!  Welcome Back!  Each September, we begin a new congregational year of exploring our UU faith together.  Please take a look at our 2023-24 Faith Development offerings for children and youth.

Spirit Play - Grades K-3 :  Spirit Play is a gentle program which introduces our children to our UU principles through story and wondering questions.  There is free time for each child to explore their creativity (called "works"). This class is based on Montessori method.

Soul Matters - Grades 4-5 :  Soul Matters classes are based on monthly themes which coincide with the monthly adult worship service themes, and explore how these themes are important to us as UUs through story, discussion and experiential learning activities.

Crossing Paths - Grades 6-8 :  In Crossing Paths we will explore other world religions through our UU lens.  This program includes several field trips to other local houses of worship.

Coming of Age - Grades 9-12 :  In the Coming of Age program, our high school youth will take a deep dive into exploring their own faith beliefs and their connection to Unitarian Universalism.  There will be at least one field trip for the COA class.  The program culminates in a Service of Affirmation, planned by the students, in which they have the opportunity to present their "Credo" to the congregation.  This class requires a commitment to attendance, as well as a family orientation session. The

Yuuth Group (open to youth ages 13-17 and their friends) will have several opportunities to have social meet-ups through the year with activities such as game nights.  Schedule to be announced.

NURSERY CARE is available every Sunday from 10:15 - 11:45 am for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

Adult RE Discussion Group - Class schedule - Fall 2023

These classes will be held on Sunday mornings beginning at 9:00 am in the Board Room or join via Zoom at https://zoom.us/my/meetingsuucv.

September 10: What Does God Look Like in Your Life?  Is there a god (or God) in your beliefs? How do you explain this entity to others? What exactly is it you believe in that helps you get through life? In this class we will discuss these things all the while keeping in mind there are no right or wrong answers. Discussion leader: Cathy Dewalt.

September 24: Race - The Power of an Illusion (Video)  Race - The Power of an Illusion is a 30-minute documentary on how the racial wealth gap was created in this country. It traces the history of discrimination against black people through the practice of red lining, the GI Bill, the development of suburbia, and the concept of urban renewal. Discussion leader: Jill Hoffman.

October 8: UUA Article II Revisions  Let's delve into the revisions to Article ii of the Unitarian Universalist By-Laws with the recent amendments that were voted on at General Assembly. How does the new language expand our faith and challenge us to live more fully into the values that define us? In what ways does the new language maintain the essence of the 8 Principles that have called each of us to Unitarian Universalism? Discussion leader: Cheryl Parsons

October 22: Spirituality Revisited  For many, the most profound and transformative spiritual experiences occur through contemplative practices such as meditation or prayer. Do such practices require belief or faith of some type and if we are lacking in that are we precluded from such experiences? Are there other avenues to finding depth and meaning in life? Discussion leader: Keith Bittinger.

November 5: Amendments to the US Constitution (Video)  Discussion leader: Melissa Mattson.

November 19: Sufism - Belief & Practices  Come participate in an experiential class. Brian McPherson will guide you through a meditation session based on Sufi practices. Afterwards participants will have a chance to give feedback and discuss their experience. Discussion leader: Brian McPherson.

December 3: The Hidden History of the Oligarchy (Video + Discussion)  The United States was born in a struggle against the oligarchs of the British aristocracy, and ever since then the history of America has been one of dynamic tension between democracy and oligarchy, asserts author Thom Hartmann. Pulling from his book The Hidden History of American Oligarchy: Reclaiming Our Democracy from the Ruling Class, Hartmann joins us via livestream to trace the history of this struggle, from America’s founding to the United States’ war with the feudal Confederacy to President Franklin Roosevelt’s struggle against “economic royalists,” who wanted to block the New Deal. While the oligarchs lost the battle in all of those cases, Hartmann argues that increasing right-wing control of the media, unlimited campaign

contributions, and a conservative takeover of the judicial system means we’re now at a crisis point. Hartmann lays out practical measures we can take that he contends will break up media monopolies, limit the influence of money in politics, reclaim the wealth stolen over decades by the oligarchy, and build a movement that will return control of America to “We the People.” Discussion leader: Cheryl Parsons.

December 17: TBD  Discussion leader: Keith Bittinger.

Q: What do you call a pepper in the fall?

A: A little chili
Yes, fall is coming. Cool nights and crisp days are on the way. The leaves are starting to fall too. Unfortunately, our grocery card sales have something in common with the leaves, our sales are falling.

Let's take this opportunity during the change of seasons to rededicate ourselves to shopping with grocery cards. Remember, 2 grocery cards each per month = $20,000+ for UUCV.

Cards can be purchased for Giant, Weis and Karns.and used for items such as food, gas and alcoholic beverages.  Stop by the grocery card table for purchases or if any questions.

Let's make this the year we reach our $20,000 goal!
