December 2019 Newsletter

From the Intern Minister...

As I write this column, it is a little over a week before Thanksgiving and by the time you read this we will all be fully ensconced in The Holiday Season – one way or another.  I do love the holidays – all of them – but my life has been so busy over the past several years that I haven’t been able to savor the preparation and rituals like I used to.   I miss that.

And while I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be able to spend the holidays with family and friends, there will be beloved faces missing from the table this year.

Many of us are busy making plans for this “most wonderful time of year.”  And for many of us a most wonderful time will be had.  But for others it will be a complicated time of year.  This may be a time when loved ones may be deeply missed or financial hardship may derail hoped for plans.  This may be a time when the Hallmark version of the holidays looks nothing like the reality of our lives.

Let us then go forward over the next many weeks with a deepened awareness of “The Full Catastrophe” of life (to quote Zorba the Greek).  Let us find ways to heighten our sense of gratitude for all that is our life and let us also remember that we seldom know the fullness of what others are carrying.  Let us make time for kindness.  Let us make time for self-care and reflection.

Let us treasure the connections of this Beloved Community.  Please join us whenever you can, but especially for our Pageant on December 15, a Solstice Celebration of December 22 and, of course, for our Christmas Eve service.

Let us make this holiday season one that truly nurtures our souls.   However and wherever you celebrate, may you know that you are loved.

With deep gratitude,

Cindy

Worship this Month

The Worship Theme for December is "We Laugh, We Cry"

December 1:  "And Yet There Is So Much Light"
This is the first Sunday of the Christian season of Advent., a time of waiting. December is often thought to be a time of waiting. Waiting for the solistice. Waiting for winter. Waiting for Christmas. Waiting in the dark for the return of the light. How can we stay in the present moment?  Kathy Ellis preaches with worship associate Julie Ham.

December 8: "Care for the Soul" Getting out of our heads and into our hearts
. Cindy Terlazzo preaches with worship associate Gisela Roethke.

December 15: "The Gifts of the Journey"  What gifts does Unitarian Universalism have to offer a special newborn child? This magical multigenerational no-rehearsal pageant will explore the gifts we have to give the next generation along our journeys.  Emily Crutcher leads the service.

December 22: "Solstice Service"  Since prehistory, the winter solstice has been seen as a signigicant time of year. It is a time that marks the symbolic death and rebirth of the Sun. Join us today as we celebrate this ancient traditon.  Cindy Terlazzo leads the service with worship associate Dot Everhart.

December 24:  "Stories and Carols"  Join us for our annual celebration of Christmas Eve, with traditional carols and Christian scriptures interspersed with contemporary reflections and interpretations, ending in candlelight.

December 29:  "
We Laugh, We Cry, We SING!"  We each have songs that can transport us to a specific memory along our journey through this life. Join us on the last Sunday of the year as we spend an hour singing familiar hymns and carols,  reflecting on our journeys through this past year, and readying ourselves to sing into the year ahead.

Helping Hands Needed

Among many of the functions we take for granted as a community, UUCV relies on volunteers for Sunday morning coffee preparation and to bring flowers to beautify our altar during worship.

Please consider signing up to prepare coffee or to bring flowers for our service.  If you’ve never made coffee at UUCV before, Max Lara will be happy to assist you with the process.

Sign-up sheets for coffee and flowers are on the Volunteer Table in the Social Hall.  Thank you.

These classes will be held on Sunday morning’s beginning at 9:00 am in the Board Room.  Everyone is welcome to join.

December 15: Mega Churches

A church is considered Mega if it has over 2,000 regular congregants. There are more than 1,300 of these in the US. What is it like to attend one of these? Why do they exist? What do they provide their members that a smaller church cannot?  Are there or could there be any UU megachurches?  Discussion leader: Joe Osborne.

December 29: Christology Wisdom

Wisdom Christology is that branch of Christian theology that looks at the ways in which the Jewish Wisdom literature was used to help craft the Jesus story.  In the gospels, Jesus himself is often portrayed as Wisdom personified.  Wisdom also becomes the “kingdom of God” within us that can be found by seeking.  These revelations, among others, have caused some scholars to have serious doubts about the historical existence of Jesus.  Discussion leader: Don Hoffman.

Mozambique

Mozambique Bursary Committee:

In the United States, we take secondary education for granted.  Never is there a question of whether our youth can attend middle and high school.  In fact, they must!

On November 10th, congregants and friends learned that girls in rural Mozambique do not have this opportunity. There, girls help support the household by hauling water, gathering firewood, tending crops and watching younger siblings. They often marry in their early teens, renewing the cycle of early childbearing and poverty. Mozambiquan girls often attend a local primary school.  But the cost of attending a regional secondary school -- room and board, school fees, uniforms and supplies is simply out of reach for most families. Your gift of $350 will support a girl for one year while she completes her secondary school education.  Gifts of any amount, however, are welcome and help Mozambiquan girls achieve their educational goals.  Checks payable to the UUCV Mozambique Bursary Project can be put into the offering or mailed to UUCV. Please give the forever gift of education to a girl in Mozambique!  Thank you for your generosity
