October 2019 Newsletter

From the Minister...

Dear friends,

A few years ago, I made a decision that would completely upend almost my entire life.  After years of satisfied childlessness, I decided I wanted to have children. This was not an expected change, but then, many of the big ones aren’t.  This one decision has upended my entire life.

Since I made that decision, I have:

 bought a house,

moved in with my best friend so that we can co-parent together,

moved in with a cat (I don’t think I can say I got a cat, they don’t really work that way),

figured out how I would go about beginning this new family,

gone to the doctor approximately one thousand times,

gotten pregnant,

gone to the doctor approximately one million times,

and actually spent 8 months being pregnant, which is a sermon (or many, many sermons) for another day.

It’s like my life is a snow globe that I shook as hard as possible to see what would happen.  Throughout this adventure, the one constant has been this place. I come to work every day, knowing I will be surrounded by people who are doing their best to co-create this beloved community.  And now it is time for me to step away from this place for a little while. Assuming all goes well my last day before maternity leave will be October 4 and I will return in early January.

As excited as I am about this new phase and as beautiful I’m sure these first few months will be, I suspect I will miss you all very much.  I also suspect I will come back changed in some ways both large and small, and I look forward to exploring those with all of you. I know I carry your support into this new, scary and exciting time.  Thank-you and I’ll look forward to coming home.

 In faith,

Rev. AIja

Worship this Month

The Worship Theme for October is "This Is My Song"

October 6:  "The Art of Translation"
We often find ourselves in situations in which we need to translate our experiences into language that is familar to us. It is through such efforts that we can build bridges to better relationships rather than walls that keep us separate.  Cindy Terlazzo leads the service with worship associate Cheryl Parsons.

October 13: "The Why"  Whether explicitly in conversations with students pondering majors or implicitly in our education budgets, American society asks often, "why choose music"? And while "I love it" ought to be a good enough answer, it's probably not the best answer to the question. Come join Rev. David as he steps from the piano to the pulpit, and listen, think, and (yes) sing with us about the role of music in our mission as Unitarian Universalists.  Rev. David M. Glasgow leads the service with worship associate Chris Kapp.

October 20: "Lost in Translation"  As a follow up to a previous service let us take a new look at ancient words: The Lord's Prayer - as we consder what may have been lost in translation.  Cindy Terlazzo leads the service with worship associate Gisela Roethke.

October 27: "Sharing Our Lives Through the Stories We Tell"  Ensemble service presented by members of the Telling Our Stories Class.  Cindy Terlazzo leads the service.

UUCV Book Group

On Sunday, October 27th, at 6:30pm in the Yuuth Room the group will discuss Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine. Physicist Alan Lightman has written an inspired, lyrical meditation on religion and science that explores the tension between our yearning for permanence and certainty, and the modern scientific discoveries that demonstrate the impermanent and uncertain nature of the world.

Coffee Makers Needed

Do you enjoy coffee after worship?

Do you enjoy light refreshments after worship?

Then we need your help.  We need volunteers to make coffee for Social Hour following worship.  Even one Sunday every couple of weeks is helpful.

Please sign up to at the Volunteer Table in the Social Hall.  If you are a first-timer, Max Lara will be happy to assist you the first time.

Office Help Needed

For almost 7 years, Bee Miller has come into the UUCV office every Friday and folded and stuffed your Orders of Service for Sundays.  Bee has also helped distributing the newsletter as well as any additional mailings you may get regarding Capital Campaign, Annual Budget Drive, or other special mailings.  A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY FRIEND BEE!!!

Bee is now going to come in one Friday a month, so I'm looking for someone to volunteer on any or all of the remaining Fridays.  Please contact me at pam@uucv.net or 717/249-8944 for more information or to volunteer.

Thanks...Pam  (PS...I have candy!!!)

Change For The World – Carlisle Tool Library

The purpose of the Carlisle Tool Library, a non-profit organization, is to “build a better community.”  The tool library empowers the community by making tools, shop space and expertise available to everyone.

Donated tools are loaned to member much like a traditional library loans books.  The organization imagines a place where anybody can take a tool and build something with the help of skilled network of people.  The library promotes a culture of self-sufficiency by offering shared tools.

Monthly memberships of $15 allow you access to up to 8 tools a week, the ability to reserve shop space for personal use, and classes taught by members of the community.

Yearly memberships are charged on a graduated scale based on your income (from $25-$50).  For example, if you make $30,000 a year you would pay $30.  $25 is the minimum charge for a yearly membership and they offer the same benefits as monthly memberships.  carlisletoollibrary.org

Fall Adult RE Schedule - 2019

These classes will be held on Sunday morning’s beginning at 9:00 am in the Board Room.  Everyone is welcome to join.

October 13: The Akashic Field - In Search of an Integral Theory

In his 2004 book Science and the Akashic Field, physicist Ervin Laszlo identifies four areas in modern science—cosmology, quantum physics, biology, consciousness research—in which current theoretical concepts have proven inadequate.  To address this problem, Laszlo offers a “new” concept: an inter-connecting cosmic information field that is foundational to all of physical reality, a field that ancient Indian sages called Akasha.  Discussion leader: Don Hoffman.

October 27: Choosing What You Feel

Many in our culture believe that our past and present circumstances determine our level of happiness and joy. We spend endless hours revisiting past/present events only to feel trapped within their grip. Yet there have been people who have faced the most dire of events that life can throw at one and come out unscathed or even enriched. This is not because these people are fundamentally different but because they have processed life differently than others. The key is surprisingly simple (not necessarily easy though). Come and find out how to guide your thoughts/feelings toward a position of love and security.  Discussion leader: Brian Wilson.

November 10: Journaling

Details to be announced.  Discussion leader: Joe Osborne.

November 24: Mental Health

Details to be announced.  Discussion leader: Chris Bilger.

December 15: Mega Churches

Details to be announced.  Discussion leader: Joe Osborne.

December 29: Christology Wisdom

Wisdom Christology is that branch of Christian theology that looks at the ways in which the Jewish Wisdom literature was used to help craft the Jesus story.  In the gospels, Jesus himself is often portrayed as Wisdom personified.  Wisdom also becomes the “kingdom of God” within us that can be found by seeking.  These revelations, among others, have caused some scholars to have serious doubts about the historical evidence of Jesus.  Discussion leader: Don Hoffman.

Choir without mid-week rehearsals?

It’s true!  Like a fish pondering a bicycle, the UUCV choir is moving away from mid-week rehearsals and shifting to a Sundays-only model!

If you’ve ever considered joining the choir, but have difficulty committing to mid-week rehearsals, this is your chance!

If your schedule makes it difficult to commit to multiple weeks of rehearsal in preparation for a choir performance, this is your chance!

If you’ve read the research that suggests it’s healthier to wake at the same time every day, and needed something to get you out of bed earlier on Sundays, this is your chance!  (Okay, this one seems somewhat less likely.…)

Starting this Sunday, September 29, the UUCV Choir has a new attendance policy: simply join us in the Sanctuary a few minutes before 8:45 AM on the Sunday morning we sing.  That’s it!  We’ll learn and polish all of the music for that morning’s service during that 8:45 rehearsal, and you’ll have a break from 9:45 to 10:30 to caffeinate, practice self-care, and prepare for worship.  We ask that choir singers wear all black, or black with a “splash” of a particular color theme.  (The schedule of upcoming choir Sundays, including the color theme for the day, if applicable, is included on the choir page of the UUCV website.)

Singers need not have any prior experience in choral singing, music-reading, or voice training, and no auditions are required.  So come join us!

Questions?  Ask a current choir member, or contact David.  We’ll look forward to singing with you!

Mozambique

Success Stories from the Mozambique Bursary Project

What do Lucia and Natercia have in common?  They are attending secondary school with the generous support of UUCV Mozambique Bursary Project’s donors.  School fees, uniforms, transportation, and living expenses in a town that may be hours from a child’s home village make attendance impossible for many girls. Poor Mozambiquan families cannot afford these expenses.  For the cost of three hundred dollars, a girl can be provided with the assistance she needs to make her educational dreams come true.  Many of our Bursary graduates are working in education, public health, and agriculture – supporting their own families and helping the people of their underdeveloped nation.

Want to know more about the good work our members, friends and supporters are doing in Mozambique? UUCV will launch its Bursary Campaign on Sunday November 10th during the regular 10:30 – 11:30 church service.  Then from 11:45 – 1:00 the Bursary Committee will provide a Mozambiquan style luncheon and an information session to celebrate the launch of our 2019 Bursary Campaign. ALL Bursary supporters – within and outside UUCV – plus anyone interested in learning about the program — are invited to UUCV on November 10th.

Lucia Julia Motoline is the daughter of peasant farmers who live in Mutaliua, Tete Province in Mozambique.  Currently a twelfth grader, Lucia is the only one of her parents’ seven children to attend secondary school.  Her dream is to become a teacher, go back to Tete Province, and teach and support families similar to her own.

Natercia Lourinho Felizardo is also one of seven children. She was twelve when her parents divorced.  At the time, Natercia thought that event had killed her dreams of obtaining a good education.  However, Naterica is currently enrolled in the twelfth grade at Namarroi secondary school and hoping to earn an accounting degree at a university.
